Some well-known figures and jump scares have been connected to the Conjuring Universe. However, a one-paced narrative has made many of its components turn out to be substandard. Four years after the events of The Nun take place in Romania, The Nun 2 transports us to Tarascon, France.
If you saw the first episode, you may remember that Maurice (Jonas Bloquet) was taken over by the evil Nun in Valak (Bonnie Aarons). The second episode picks up where the first left off. The Nun kills victims while controlling Maurice in order to locate a MacGuffin. Following several murders of Fathers and Nuns, Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) and Sister Debra (Storm Reid) have returned to look into this. The two go all out to save Maurice while killing Valak since they have a link to Maurice.
It is clear that the movie has improved when compared to the first portion. However, with repeated jump scare patterns and needless gore (particularly in the second half), it falls short of offering anything original or significant.
The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It and The Curse of La Llorona, filmmaker Michael Chaves’ most recent efforts, failed to leave a lasting impression, and he continues to let us down with The Nun 2.
Regarding the performances, Bonnie Aarons reprises her role as Valak, but this time, instead of giving us the goosebumps, the filmmakers overexposed her too early, leaving us with no mystery. Unfortunately, Taissa Farmiga’s Sister Irene, the film’s main character, doesn’t have as much depth as the character from the prequel. Jonas Bloquet fulfills the expectations placed on him.
The film’s BGM, which was desperately needed to intensify the spooky mood, offers nothing novel or distinctive while the storyline is hindered by its slow pace.
The Nun 2 is primarily riddled with clichés from the horror genre, which is only entertaining if you are a fan of The Conjuring Universe.
